The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, held its last note a little after midnight on February 2, 1959. Buddy Holly had played two sets with a pickup band, backing singers Dion and the Belmonts, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. Richardson, known onstage as the Big Bopper.
